Tuesday, Oct 27th, Santa Rosa, California

Today, I received an email confirming what we suspected.  The small nodule in my left lower jaw is HPV-Associated squamous cell carcinoma, with the tumor originating in my left tonsil.  After an MRI and a PET SCAN, the good news is that does not appear that it has spread to anywhere else.  This week, my Kaiser doctor will consult with a team on whether to "do chemo and radiation therapy up front vs surgery up front.  Even after surgery, there may be a need for chemo and radiation therapy, but that depends on the status of the secondary lymph nodes."

That's why you haven't been reading about a trip to Jordan and Egypt over the past month.  Instead, I've been walking neighborhoods for two friends who are running for the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors.  So far, I've knocked on 635 doors, and expect to add another 100 more by Monday.

Yes, I'm probably doing the typical guy thing, and mostly ignoring how I feel about this.  But I do have Pat, and plenty of other smart friends whose experience and wisdom has been shared with me.  I love them for it, and will try very hard to listen to their advice and appreciate their support.
